Human Services

The original location of Baker College was in Flint Township, and the college dates back to 1911. Eventually, the college expanded to a variety of sites around Michigan, and one of those sites eventually became Baker College of Muskegon in the town of the same name. Davenport University

Donald W. Maine School of Business

A private university with 11 campuses around Michigan, Davenport University has been offering classes since 1866. The main campus is near Grand Rapids, and was founded by a veteran of the Union Army in the Civil War. Some initial programs offered at the school included bookkeeping, business law, arithmetic, and penmanship. The college underwent a variety of name changes over the years, and it was almost closed a century ago. However, a teacher at the school helped to revive the ailing campus and eventually the college would gain accreditations and expand to include additional campuses around the state. Eastern Michigan University

Management Department – College of Business

Established in 1849, Eastern Michigan University is one of many schools in Michigan with a very long history. The school was originally called Michigan State Normal School, and grew from a very small class of students in its first operating year of 1953 to a present-day student body total of over 23,000 students. The university today has seven colleges, which are spread out over a large campus of 700 acres and more than 120 structures. The college offers a variety of sports for students to participate in at the collegiate and casual level, and the school’s mascot is an eagle named “Swoop.”

Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resource Management

A major in management at Eastern Michigan University is designed to help students move into supervisory positions, and the human resources component ensures students can work at the management level in that segment of business. The major in human resources is a management degree that features a concentration in human resources. Ferris State University

College of Business

A public university in Big Rapids, Ferris State was founded by a man who would eventually become a governor of the state and a member of the United States senate. Interestingly, the school made an early name for itself by accepting female students during its first years in operation in the 1880s, which was rare for colleges in the 19th century. Today, the university has grown to one of the largest in the state with around 15,000 students attending classes on its main and satellite campuses. In addition to attending classes in Big Rapids, students can also go to classes at 19 different locations around the state.

Ferris describes its Bachelor of Business Administration as the signature program of its department, and one of the offered concentrations is Human Resource Management. The school offers faculty who have a variety of types of experience from academic to corporate. Oakland University

School of Business Administration

A public university in Auburn Hills, Oakland University is a large school on a 1,500 acre campus. Over 20,000 students attend classes at Oakland, and the school is considered a Doctoral Research University by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The school was opened rather recently in 1959 and had just 570 students attending its first year. The campus was also small and had just 3 buildings. It would become a university after just four years and would continue to grow rapidly over the next several decades. The school’s motto is “seek virtue and knowledge,” and the school’s athletic teams play in NCAA Division 1.

University of Michigan—Dearborn

College of Business

The Dearborn branch of the University of Michigan was established in 1959, and it’s one of 15 public universities in the state. The school has just over 9,000 students attending, and has a pair of satellite campuses in Ann Arbor and Flint in addition to its Dearborn location. The school gained recognition for its engineering and management programs, and the departments housing those programs have been dubbed some of the best in the nation by various ranking organizations. Interestingly, the school was originally conceived by the director of training at the Ford Motor Company. He felt there was a manpower shortage and wanted locally trained people for openings at the company.

Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Human Resource Management

Students in the BBA program are offered a curriculum designed to prepare the student to work within human resources at the management level. Students will learn how to handle personnel and administer company policy through administration. Students get to choose from a variety of courses to personalize their educational experience in the BBA program. Classes students may choose from include Staffing, Training, and Development, Management-Union Relations, and Management Skills Development, in addition to many others. Western Michigan University

Haworth College of Business

A little over 100 years old, Western Michigan University has a large school and has nearly 24,000 students attending. The school boasts one of the largest programs in aviation anywhere in the country. The school was originally built as one of the teacher-training facilities in Michigan and was originally known as Western State Normal School. The school underwent a variety of name changes until it obtained its modern name. WMU’s five campuses comprise around 1,200 acres, and have around 150 buildings. Some of the oldest buildings are at the West Campus, and students also take classes at East Campus and a handful of other campuses around Kalamazoo.

Human Resource Management – BBA

Western Michigan University describes its human resources degree as one that emphasizes proven theories and concepts within HR and helps students learn how to apply those principles within standard business environments. Some of the topics discussed in class include managing a workforce, employee relations, and management. In addition, students learn about staffing, compensation, and organizational development.
