SHRM Aligned Bachelor’s in Human Resources Programs in Maine

Find Your Degree!

The Society for Human Resource Management reviews the Bachelor’s in Human Resources programs in Maine, and in every other state, in an attempt to determine whether or not the curriculum aligns with the SHRM standards. If it does, the group lends their seal of approval to the program and adds it to a growing, yet elite, group of degrees that are considered among the best by potential employers. Students in Maine have just one such program to choose from, though it’s easily one of the best in New England in terms of prestige, student-to-professor ratios, and overall outcomes in terms of job placement and career success.

Thomas College

Continuing Education Division

Founded late in the 18th century, Thomas College has long been one of New England’s leading liberal arts institutions. Despite a reputation more aligned with the liberal arts, the school’s business-centered degree in human resource management is the only SHRM-aligned option in the state of Maine. Combined with the school’s less than 1,300 undergraduate students and its large faculty, the degree offers rigorous coursework with individual attention throughout the four-year program. The school typically ranks near the top in New England for post-graduation job placement and overall value, and its campus is often ranked as among the most beautiful in Maine.

B.S., Human Resource Management

The Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management program at Thomas College is designed to combine the liberal arts tradition with a forward-thinking program in human resources. For this reason, all new students must take an extensive core curriculum in the liberal arts. Six credits each of English, foreign language, math, and history, must be taken. Three credits science, social sciences, and the humanities, are also required. Students will the move into coursework related to their major, including introductory accounting, marketing, economics, and corporate finance.

Students will study the ethics of human resources management, the art of benefit contract negotiation, the government laws and regulations that govern employee privacy and confidentiality, and the best management techniques for a large human resources department that they’re responsible for managing. Students will be given a solid foundation for graduate studies in this field thanks to an optional senior thesis, and will be prepared for their first job in human resources through a mandatory, fourth-year internship in HR at a local corporation.
