School of Business

This college is ranked by the U.S. News and World Report as # 6 of Regional Colleges South. This school was founded in 1891 as a Baptist women’s college. It still is a women’s school in the undergraduate courses but there are some men attending graduate school.  Class sizes are small; the student-to-faculty ratio is 12:1. There is a study-abroad opportunity available in Italy, France, Costa Rica and Iceland.


BSBA with a Concentration in Human Resources

This school is focused on a strong liberal arts education as a foundation for all of its majors. Graduates of this program will have strong leadership skills through the experience allowed in small classes. In addition to core business skills the program seeks to impart the ability to analyze human resource problems and arrive at solutions within legal and ethical boundaries. The program contains 57 to 60 hours in addition to the university liberal arts requisites: 30 to 42 in the major and an additional 18 in the electives that build the concentration. Some of the required courses are: Financial Accounting; Managerial Accounting; Applied Data Analysis; Principles of Management in Business and Society; International Business; Business Law and Ethics and others, including an internship. The concentration contains classes like Compensation and Benefits; Staffing and Gender in Economics.

Montreat College

Business Department

This school gets its name from a shortening of its original title, Mountain Retreat. It is a Christian liberal arts school ranked, by U.S.News and World Report, in the second tier of Regional Universities. The school is small; there are 400 undergraduate students in addition to the graduate student population. With its small classes and good student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1 there is a lot of student and staff interaction. In addition, the school aggressively networks to give students opportunities to interact with the community and businesses in real-world experiences, lectures, workshops, visits and internships.

Bachelor of Business Administration, concentration Human Resource Management

The goal of the traditional track in this degree is that graduates will possess technical ability, effective written and oral communication skills and “servant leadership.” The non-traditional track goals are to produce graduates who can apply the theory of classroom instruction to real life employment and show analytical skills with ethical consideration. The classes are aimed at helping students translate biblical principles to a global business perspective. The degree contains 53 hours of general education classes and general education competency requisites, 46 hours in the major and 15 to 30 in the concentration for a minimum total of 126 credit hours. All business students take a major field test upon completing their course of study. Courses included in the HR Management concentration are Human Resource Management; Labor Relations; Organizational Behavior; Servant Leadership; Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management and others. Students who earn the degree through the online adult education track available to those with at least two years of work experience, can finish the program in about two years.

Mount Olive College

Tillman School of Business

This private school, founded in 1951, is ranked #56 of Regi0onal Colleges by the U.S. News and World Report, and # 18 of Best Schools for Vets. The classes are small; student-to-faculty ratio is 14:1. This school uses the term “transformational education” to denote an innovative conception of learning that is unified through disciplines and personalized to the student. The college places a great emphasis on students acquiring values in their professions. Programs ae offered in traditional classroom, online and evening formats.

Bachelor of Applied Science in Human Resource Management

An applied science degree is usually targeted at practical professional application and is often a terminal degree, which means students do not usually go on to graduate programs. This degree is open to applicants who have completed two years of vocational school and/or who hold an associate degree with at least 64 credit hours completed successfully. Students are required to meet general education proficiencies and take 21 hours from the field of management, organizational relations and human resource management. They must also select four courses from among Corporate management and decision making; compensation management; labor relations, employee benefits; employment law; special topics and an advanced seminar. The program contains 126 hours including the vocational school credits.

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration

The main components of this degree are organizational management, personnel administration, manpower management, organizational behavior, corporate training and development, compensation management, labor relations and employment law. The general education requisite of the university, containing 46 credit hours, stresses written and oral communication fluency, technical literacy, cultural literacy and a foundation in the natural and human sciences. There are also 17 hours of general education electives. The Tillman School of Business core requisites contain36 hours and there are an additional 27 in the major. The degree requires a minimum of 126 credit hours to graduate including an internship, an advanced seminar and a research project.

North Carolina State University

Poole School of Management

North Carolina State University was founded in 1887. It is ranked by the U,S, News and World report as # 95 of National Universities and #43 of Top Public Schools. Most classes have less than 50 students, and the student-to-faculty ratio is 17:1. The focus of the school is diversity and real world experiences to supplement the classroom lectures. Students in the business school take general classes in business to give them breadth and extensive concentration classes to build depth into their educations. The school is near the “Research Triangle” and several governmental agencies and that affords the students opportunities for professional mentoring and experiential learning.

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Human Resources Management

The emphasis of this degree is on core business functions and all students take finance, marketing, supply chain, human resource management and information technology before declaring one of them as their concentration. In addition to the general liberal arts requisites of the university and the core business administration and elective requirements, students in the human resource track take compensation systems, staffing, labor and employee relations leadership and management and training and development. The business administration classes are housed in the Poole School of Management while the human resource component is based in the School of Social Sciences and Humanities. This degree contains 120 credit hours.

Winston-Salem State University

The College

This school was founded in 1892 as a black university. It is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as # 60 of Regional Universities South. There ae 74 majors and 10 graduate study programs available and class size is small enough to encourage student-faculty interactions. The school takes an interdisciplinary approach to education and houses their arts, sciences, business and education courses in the same college. The approach is meant to enrich study by encouraging cross-discipline collaboration and inquiry. The School of Health Sciences is not included in “The College,” as its interests are different.

Bachelor of Science in Business Management, Human Resource Management

The 23 full-time faculty members of this department strive to help students integrate the foundations and theories acquired through the classroom experience with practical skills. The major contains a minimum of 72 hours of required courses including 27 in the major and 45 in the business core. This also satisfies some of the university general education requisites. Pre-calculus is mandatory and if students are not prepared for this course, they may have to take some preparatory classes. The business core classes are the same for any major, but the 27 major courses for Human Resource management require Intro to Human Resource Management, Principles of Management, Leadership: A Practical and Theoretical Approach, Organizational Staffing and other courses germane to the major.
